Knee

COMMON KNEE CONDITIONS & INJURIES:

Osteoarthritis
Meniscus Tears
ACL Injury
MCL Injury

  • Osteoarthritis OA is the most common form of knee arthritis, and is usually a slowly progressive degenerative disease in which the joint cartilage gradually wears away. Weight loss, physical therapy and NSAIDS (Ibuprofin, Motrin, etc.) are recommended for most people with osteoarthritis of the knee. Viscosupplementation injections (Synvisc, Orthovisc, etc.) are sometimes helpful in managing the symptoms. Total knee replacement is often suggested once the patient can no longer achieve adequate pain relief using non-operative methods.
  • Meniscus Tears One of the most commonly injured parts of the knee, the meniscus, is a wedge-like rubbery cushion located where the major bones of the leg connect. Athletes in contact and non-contact sports may tear the meniscus by twisting the knee, pivoting, cutting, or decelerating.
  • ACL injury ACL injury can be caused by changing direction rapidly, slowing down when running, and landing from a jump. The ACL is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament.
  • MCL injury MCL injuries to the Medial Collateral Ligament are usually caused by a direct blow to the outside of the knee.
